The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any significant awards ceremony nears, there’s always an outcry for the addition of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of fans who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: There should be a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of video games, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
